OFFICE TIMING: 10.00 AM TO 5.00 PM (MON TO SAT)
Basic Function:
Carries out analysis and testing of bullion “shipment” and bag concentrate to determine mineral content – gold, silver, copper, zinc, etc. – and reports results accordingly.
Work Performed:
-Receives work assignment and bullion from Chargehand, Fire Assay with instructions on what analysis and tests to conduct, chemicals, weights, grades and equipment to use. Cleans work area including balances, tools, equipment, utensils, etc. to ensure accuracy of results and checks furnace to ensure cleanliness and proper operation.
-Carries out prescribed tests and analysis in accordance with laboratory procedures to determine mineral content (gold, silver, copper, zinc) of the sample. Includes weighing, logging entry, cleaning from slag, determining presence of iron, dividing into proof and test samples, pouring into lead vessels, feeding into furnace, allowing to cool down, adding diluted nitric acid to separate gold from silver (annealing), washing, drying, re-feeding into furnace, re-weighing, and calculating content of each mineral in the sample, etc.
-Records assay results into logbook and bullion analysis sheet and informs supervisor accordingly.
-Reports to supervisor shortage of materials, faulty equipment, hazardous situations, etc. for further action.
-Practices good housekeeping and observes safety regulations and procedures.
-Performs other similar or related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements:
-Completion of Secondary (12 years) education science stream followed by short courses (2 to 3 months duration) in precious metals analysis
-Minimum 10 years on the job experience in an assay laboratory preferably in the mining industry.
-Fair spoken and written English
